Update on the Keith Davis Tennis Centre in Shining Hill

Dear Members of the Tennis Community:

Thank you to those of you who have reached out to inquire about the status of construction for the new tennis facility being built in the Shining Hill subdivision.  There is clearly excitement about the new facility.

The site of the new facility is in a valley area with a large, elevated wooded area to the west of the site.  This will make for a beautiful backdrop and will serve as protection from excessive winds.  However, it also means that the site is a complex site to build upon.  Fortunately, the Town of Newmarket is working with a reputable developer who has a strong team place including an established landscape architecture firm who are well versed in tennis court construction.   The developer and team are strongly committed to the completion of a top rate facility for the Town and the tennis community.

Unfortunately, given the complexity of the site, the tennis facility will not be ready this fall as initially planned.  The site requires significant fill and that fill must be given time to settle and be compacted or we risk having ongoing issues with the court surface.  Simply put, we would rather take the time to do it right and ensure that an outstanding product in the long term.  Work will begin this summer and will continue moving forward with the infill, monitoring and construction.  We plan to have the new facility fully operational for the 2024 summer season.

Continuing winter tennis during this delay continues to be a priority for the Town of Newmarket.  To ensure continuity, Terry Redvers of the Tennis Clubs of Canada, has very graciously agreed to operate the Newmarket Winter Tennis Club for one more year at the current location.  He will send out updates on membership purchase and programming over the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for your continued feedback and support in helping to create the vision for the future of tennis in our community.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at cservice@newmarket.ca

Sincerely,

Colin Service
