2023 Events
This past Saturday, NCTC hosted our final 2023 Year-end Mixed Doubles Tournament. Once again, we had perfect weather for tennis with the sun shining and the gentle breeze keeping the players comfortable. We have been truly fortunate for our tournaments this year as all 3 tournament weekends were beautiful weather!
This year, our Mixed Doubles tournament hosted 20 players (10 teams) in the Mixed B Division and 10 players (5 teams) in the Mixed A Division. Another fantastic turnout of participants with some great competitive and memorable matches. All the tennis action began at 9:00am at the Keith Davis Tennis Centre courts, with fans and supporters in attendance!
The winners of Mixed A Division were Shane Hickson and Billie Wismer. Both players received a $30.00 Starbucks gift card as the Championship prize. Our finalists were Andrea Mariash and Michael Vanstone. Each of our runners-up received a $15.00 Starbucks gift card for their valiant effort.
The winners of the Mixed B Division were Alyssa Salamat and Hung Ho. They also receive special mention as our “best dressed” team, sporting their matching M&M t-shirts! Such a creative idea guys!! Alyssa and Hung were awarded a $30.00 Starbucks gift cards each. Our finalists were Ellen Li and Joe Jiang, who also received a $15.00 Starbucks Gift cards each.
Congratulations to our winners and finalists, and a BIG THANK YOU to all those NCTC members who participated in making our final year-end Mixed Doubles tournament a success!
Lastly, our thanks to our tournament and season sponsors, to our club Coaches Brian and Shane for their assistance with creating fun and competitive tournament draws, and to our tournament director Lambert Kwok for the hard work and countless hours behind the scenes organizing our 2023 tournaments!!

On the Ladies side of the draw, the registrant numbers were lower than expected, so both the A & B Divisions were amalgamated into one draw. The winner of the 2023 Newmarket Ladies Singles tournament was Stella Moulelis. Of special note, this is Stella’s 3rd time winning the Ladies B Singles Tournament (she won in 2019 and 2021) – so we’d like to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Stella on this amazing accomplishment!! Stella was awarded a pink tennis racquet bag, donated by sponsor RacquetGuys. Kudos as well to our Ladies Singles runner-up, Atsuko Saiki who was awarded a $15.00 gift certificate from Starbucks. Congratulations to both Stella and Atsuko!
The Men's B Singles tournament hosted our largest participant draw. There were several notable matches that contained some lengthy rallies and entertaining points. The winner of the 2023 Men's B Singles Tournament was Steven Borenstein. Steven was awarded a grey tennis racquet bag donated by RacquetGuys. The Men’s B runner-up was Hung Ho, who was awarded a $15.00 gift certificate from Starbucks. Special mention to Alyssa Salamat and Dang Tran for their long grinding match – both did a stellar job!
On the Men's A Singles tournament draw, there were 7 players. Definitely some notable close matches and some fantastic point play amongst the tournament competitors. Our 2023 Men’s ‘A’ Singles Champion was Braeden MacLean, who fiercely fought back from down a 3-5 break against opponent Filip Sierpinski. It was such a close, hard-fought match, but Braeden prevailed holding serve and winning the championship 8-6. Braeden was awarded a blue t-shirt from RacquetGuys and new Head Hawk Touch strings. Our finalist Fil was awarded new Prince strings.
Our thanks to our tournament sponsors, Coach Brian, and tournament director Lambert for another successful year-end singles tournament. Don’t forget, our final Mixed Doubles year-end tournament is tomorrow!!
